Mac DeMarco was the featured musical guest on Friday’s installment of “Play At Home,” the video performance series from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. DeMarco debuted “Fooled By Love” and saw accompaniment by The Late Show bandleader, Jon Batiste, on keys.
After an encouraging “Let’s do it,” the exhalation of smoke, and the start of an electronic drum beat, DeMarco began the smooth acoustic track sitting next to an odd spinning head. Batiste joined in with his silky piano accents by the end of the first measure and the two were off to the races. The soft nature of DeMarco’s voice carried the majority of the tune as his steady picking added depth in addition to riffs from Jon’s piano. Midway through, however, DeMarco called out, “Ladies and gentlemen, Jon Batiste,” which signaled for the pianist to take a solo and carried the two to the final chorus.
